THE towering majesty
of Sophocles' tragedy needs no embellishment. Adaptor Jonathan
Shelley and Works Well Productions have given this central
play of the Theban trilogy an almost perfect platform in the
intimate setting of the Everyman's studio.
A simple, beautifully co-ordinated set, clever use of lighting
and atmospheric sound make for a production that is thrilling
and chilling in equal measure. Though much has been cut from
the 2,500-year-old original, all the tragedy, the passion
and the unfathomable depth of emotion expressed by Sophocles
are highlighted by a hard-working cast of five.
David Rex as Oedipus gives a majestic and moving performance
of a man blinded in every sense by his passions, condemned
by the gods to live a life of pain but to die a glorious death.
This is a little gem of a production.
The Evesham Journal
Nowadays, Sophocle’s great plays are rarely stages
and Works Well Productions are to be congratulated on presenting
this new adaptation of Oedipus at Colonus by Jonathan Shelley,
who also directed and acted in the play….The play is
one of a trilogy that has been performed continuously for
about 2500 years yet amazingly it is still accessible to audiences
in the 21st Century. A full house listened in rapt silence
as the tragic events unfolded… David Rex’ Oedipus
was a most moving figure.. Justine Marriott and Lisa Lee Thomas
were entirely credible as his daughters and gave excellent
performances. And there were good performances from Adrian
Ross Jones (Creon and Polynices) and Jonathan Shelley (Theseus).
If this was a rather harrowing evening at the theatre it was
also an uplifting and a sublime one.
