Following 3 years development on this Epic work, Works Well present
a brand new adaptation of the entire Theban Trilogy in one evening
of intense and thrilling theatre.
Sophocles’ epic Theban trilogy, dealing with the story of
Oedipus (Oedipus Rex), his death (Oedipus at Colonus) and the fate
of his children (Antigone), was originally written as three separate
plays dealing with different themes and was not created as a three
part story that could be presented together with complete consistency
of time and character. The opportunity to present these plays as
a single piece of theatre is the culmination of three years of development,
allowing the sustained unfolding of story and character normally
impossible in the separate treatment of these works.
In 2004 and 2005 Works Well Productions successfully staged new
adaptations of ‘Antigone’ and ‘Oedipus at Colonus’,
and it has been our long term aim to reconcile these plays with
each other and ‘Oedipus Rex’, and present the entire
Theban cycle as a single, valuable, example of human drama. In May
2006 we staged a studio version of this epic in partnership with
The Everyman, Cheltenham and are now able to offer the piece on
a larger scale for national touring.
By remaining faithful to the mastery of Sophocle’s epic work
and respecting the value of insights from almost two and a half
thousand years ago, Works well productions will apply its core values
by making this ancient drama feel alive and accessible for a 21st
Century audience. As ever, our focus will be the timeless exploration
of human emotions displayed in this classic drama, as we continue
to work with a small and dedicated ensemble company creating intense
and powerful theatre.
